Holiday HVAC System Maintenance Tips

The holidays are fast approaching—but while they are some of the happiest times of the year, they are also one of the busiest! People throughout the Chicagoland area (and all over the country) are preparing to travel or entertain guests.

What does this mean in terms of HVAC? Well, we suggest taking care of a few things now so you can have peace of mind during the holidays. Completely neglecting your HVAC system can not only leave your home uncomfortable for your guests but also increase the risk of fire or other health hazards—or expose your home to bursting pipes or other problems while you’re out of town.

What You Can Do to Prepare Your Home

We aren’t saying you need to go out and replace your furnace today (although if it’s more than 10 – 15 years old and has been malfunctioning more frequently, it may be a good idea to replace it sooner rather than later!), but there are a few things you can do to ensure your home will be comfortable and safe for the holidays:

  • Change your filters: Replace the filters in your heating system so you don’t have any indoor air quality or system breakdown worries.
  • Adjust the thermostat setting: Having more people in the house and cooking can create a warmer environment, reducing the need for high heat. If you’re going out of town, keep your heat on to prevent your pipes form bursting, but lower the temperature a bit to help keep your energy costs down.
  • Keep flammable objects in safe places: This one may seem obvious, but it can get hectic with kids running around and cooking in the kitchen. Be sure to keep things like blankets and wrapping paper away from heating systems (including small space heaters) to avoid fire hazards. If you’re traveling, do a quick check before leaving!
  • Consider alternative methods for heating: Did you know simple things like using your ceiling fans and keeping the shades open can help keep your home warm? On your fan, find the switch located on the base and turn it so that the blades rotate the opposite way (this helps circulate warm air trapped near the ceiling downwards into the rest of the room). Keep your blinds open to let in more natural light. Both of these can give your HVAC system some help so it doesn’t have to work as hard.
  • Get an HVAC inspection: A furnace maintenance visit can’t hurt! If you haven’t already scheduled an inspection, we recommend doing so before it gets too cold and the chaos of the holidays starts. HVAC system maintenance can catch minor issues before they become major problems and give you peace of mind when you’re entertaining or traveling.

The Importance of Preventive Furnace Maintenance

Heating and cooling your home accounts for more than half of your annual energy costs. The key to minimizing your energy bills is keeping your heating and cooling equipment running as efficiently as possible by performing routine preventive maintenance. Routine maintenance will also extend the life of your heating and cooling equipment, which can save you money on HVAC repairs and replacement costs in the long run. Since winter is on it’s way, we wanted to specifically share the importance of preventive furnace maintenance.

Improve Furnace Efficiency

Next to the air conditioner, the furnace is one of the biggest energy users in your home. Routine preventative maintenance will keep your furnace running smoothly so as to minimize energy consumption and resulting energy costs. Although normal age-related efficiency loses can’t be avoided, preventative maintenance can maintain peak efficiency.

Prevent Major Furnace Repairs

In addition to lower energy consumption, an efficient furnace will also run into fewer mechanical and electrical problems than a furnace that is not very well maintained. If you schedule preventative maintenance with an I Want Smart HVAC contractor, the technician will also be able to spot any minor or developing furnace issues before they get any worse and require major repairs. This alone can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in repair and replacement costs over the life of your heating system.

Keep Warm and Comfortable

There’s another important advantage of maintaining your furnace: Your comfort! A well-maintained furnace will usually deliver optimal performance throughout the cold months, which means you can expect to stay warm all winter long without any surprise furnace problems. Furthermore, a well-maintained furnace may also help to improve indoor air quality and humidity levels for added comfort.

Tips to Maintain your Heating System

Your home heating system is designed to provide you with worry-free performance for many decades. While your heating system may not need frequent heating repair services, routine central heating maintenance will help your system operate at peak efficiency. By keeping up on your home’s heating repairs, you can prevent a heating emergency down the road. An I Want Smart Contractor can help you keep your heating in great shape throughout the seasons. To assist you with your heating repair needs, here is a look at some essential maintenance tips for your heating system.

Check Your Thermostat

Your thermostat is one of the most vital parts of your home heating system. To keep your heating system in great shape, it is a good idea to check your thermostat on an annual basis. When you check your thermostat, make sure that it is set to a comfortable temperature. By setting your programmable thermostat, you can also help to cut back on your heating bills.

Change Your Filters

Your heating system is equipped with filters that are designed to remove allergens, dust, and debris from your indoor air. When your heating system is operating on a daily basis, your filters can become quickly clogged. To maintain your heating system, it is a great idea to change your filters on a monthly basis. With fresh filters, your home heater will be able to operate at maximum efficiency throughout the coldest months of the year.

Schedule Professional Repairs

An I Want Smart Contractor will be able to perform all of the most important maintenance procedures for your heating system. In general, it is a good idea to set up a maintenance appointment on an annual basis. During your annual service, your Smart technician will inspect your heating system for any signs of damage. With preventative maintenance, you can help your system last for many years to come. Take advantage of our Smart Rebates and SAVE even more!

How To Prep Your HVAC System For Cooler Weather

It’s that time of year again. Temperatures are slowly starting to cool, with the daylight hours quickly getting shorter. As another Chicago summer comes to a close, now is the perfect time to transition your HVAC system to effectively heat your home during the cold weather months.

These simply guidelines from the professionals at I Want Smart will have you resting warm and cozy inside your home this winter.

Schedule System Maintenance
It’s vital to have an HVAC technician run a full maintenance checkup on your furnace to ensure it’s running smoothly, checking that no repairs or replacements are needed before the temperatures drop. Autumn and spring are the most effective times of the year to have maintenance done. The reason is that these months put the least amount of pressure of your systems because temperatures don’t hit extreme highs or lows.

Change Air Filters
A simply solution to staying toasty this winter is changing your air filter. A dirty, poorly maintained air filter can wreak havoc on your furnace because it is forced to work harder for the same heat output. Not routinely changing your filters will also increase your electricity costs. Instead of spending your hard-earned money on more expensive heating, take the family ice skating in Millennium Park or spend a weekend skiing at a cozy lodge in the Upper Peninsula.

Perform Repairs & Replacements
Imagine heating that spits out cool air on a chilly fall day, or worse a furnace that completely breaks down on an icy winter night. Making necessary repairs to your HVAC system or replacing a piece of equipment that is no longer running at optimal levels is the best way to save money over the long term. One easy way to keep the heat in this winter is to seal up any leaks from cracks in the doors and windows caused by age and weathering.

Install a Programmable Thermostat
Another measure to keeping your house comfortable while saving money is a programmable thermostat. This provides the option of automating the temperature to when you are home, programming the thermostat to output heat when you return from work and then lowering it while you sleep.

Let I Want Smart help your home stay toasty this fall and winter, while saving big on your HVAC maintenance and preventive services. Take advantage of three exclusive rebates currently being offered to I Want Smart customers for furnace/AC replacements and a comprehensive systems checkup.

I Want Smart Rebrands Company, Unveils New Logo and Website

I Want SMART Rebrands!

Announcing a recent rebranding effort, I Want Smart reveals a revamped brand identity reflected through a new, bolder logo and streamlined website. The rebranding debuted late July 2015 and is part of a transition to broaden market reach and appeal to a younger, more tech-savvy demographic.

I Want Smart launched with a single purpose, to develop a user-friendly digital marketplace that connects homeowners with professional HVAC contractors and quality service. Today, the brand has grown to a large network of industry-leading HVAC contractors servicing all of northeastern Illinois.

Logo redesign was the first component of the company’s new brand identity. The new logo keeps I Want Smart’s blue and green color scheme, while introducing a more contemporary look for a sleek and modern update. Design modifications to the logo were subtle and focused on expressing the unique value proposition, while remaining consistent with the company ideals. The logo kept the existing tagline and outer circle, which both represent a total commitment to industry-best service and support of our customers.

The redesigned website (www.iwantsmart.com) incorporates the look and feel of the new I Want Smart brand and serves as a better functioning online resource for local homeowners and partnering HVAC contractors. Advancements to the website make it easier to navigate across all pages, and an update to the inquiry portal has provided easier access for homeowners, contractors and technicians to contact the company.

This rebranding effort represents the company’s evolution into a dynamic full-scale HVAC solution, with an expectation to further expand the existing network of contractors. I Want Smart looks forward to taking business to the next level in future years, while maintaining a history of quality, valuable and trustworthy service.

Three Ways to Ensure Better AC Filtration

HVAC systems are challenging and can lead to unforeseen and frustrating disasters if not properly serviced. Perhaps the most important piece of equipment to keep well-maintained is an air conditioning filter. AC filters are essential to the proper running of your home’s cooling system, helping increase air flow and improving indoor air quality.

SMART has put together a guide to monitoring for better filtration and improving your home’s air quality and cooling.

Replacement Rate

HVAC experts advise examining your air conditioner’s filter once a month to determine if it’s running effectively, having a trained technician clean or replace the filter every 1-3 months. The frequency at which you should change you filter is determinant on a number of specific factors. Filters may need more frequent attention if the air conditioner is in constant use, is subjected to dusty conditions, and if you have pets or family members who smoke in the house.

MERV Rating

All filters have an efficiency rating to determine its effectiveness at cooling. A Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV rating) is a standard to rate the overall effectiveness of air filters. Filters are given a MERV rating on a scale of 1 to 16 for efficiency, with higher values equating to filtration that prevents more dust particles and airborne contaminants from getting through.

Variations in Efficiency

It’s important to know that there are a variety of AC filter types and efficiencies to choose from. Some filters’ efficiency ratings are too high for particular units and can actually have a negative effect on its performance. A filter that is too large or small for your system will block the flow of air. If necessary, consult your local HVAC technician to inquire about installing a separate filtration system for better air quality.

Improve the AC efficiency in your home. Contact a SMART technician today to schedule service of your HVAC system and ensure the AC filtration is running smoothly during the summer months.

Giving Back the SMART Way

There are plenty of reasons to choose a SMART contractor, but have you heard about how we give back to the community? When an opportunity to sponsor a Jr. League baseball team from the east side of Joliet came up, I Want SMART jumped on it. Belmont Little League has advanced to the Illinois State Tournament to continue their fight to play Michigan for the Little League World Series on Friday, July 24th. With the high costs of hotels, food and gas to get the team there they had to put a slight hold on going. I Want SMART knows the importance and impact that this type of experience has on kids and that’s why it was a given to make a donation to the team. With the help of I Want SMART, Belmont Little League was able to get to the tournament and fight for a win against Michigan!

Let us know if you would like to help donate to this cause or if you have another cause you would like I Want SMART to donate to.
